Not only angels have halos: By utilizing a concept, which was first applied to halogens, to reaction mixtures such as Me3Si-X/[Me3Si-X-SiMe3]+ (X=CN, OCN, SCN, and NNN), it was possible to prepare the first bissilylated pseudohalonium cations in high yields, thereby proving and extending the pseudohalogen concept.
By utilizing reaction mixtures such as Me3Si–X/[Me3Si–X–SiMe3]+ (X = CN, OCN, SCN, and NNN), it was possible to prepare in high yields the first examples of bissilylated pseudohalonium cations. The structure and bonding of a whole series of salts containing pseudo halonium cations is discussed on the basis of experimentally observed (X-ray, Raman, IR, MS) and theoretically obtained data. Salts containing pseudohalonium cations are only stable in the presence of weakly coordinating anions such as the well-known tetrakis(penta fluorophenyl)borate, [B(C6F5)4]–.
