There are various alumni of the University of Rostock which have become famous – find some of them listed below:
- Dr. Till Backhaus (*1959), Member of State Parliament, Politician, 1980-1985 Study of Plant production in Rostock, Minister of Agriculture of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern since 1998, 2003-2007 Regional party leader of the SPD Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
- Dr. Joachim Gauck (*1940), priest, former Federal commissioner for Documents of the GDR state security, since 18th of march 2012 eleventh Federal President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Study of Theology, Honorary doctor of the Theological Faculty
- Dr. Heinz Kindermann (*1942), Politician, 1959-1961 University of Rostock, 1994-2009 Member of the EU-Parliament
- Roland Methling (*1954), Politician, current Mayor of Rostock, studied Technical Cybernetics and Automation in Rostock from 1972 on
