There are various alumni of the University of Rostock which have become famous – find some of them listed below:

  • Dr. Till Backhaus (*1959), Member of State Parliament, Politician, 1980-1985 Study of  Plant production in Rostock, Minister of Agriculture of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern since 1998, 2003-2007 Regional party leader of the SPD Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
  • Dr. Joachim Gauck (*1940), priest, former Federal commissioner for Documents of the GDR state security, since 18th of march 2012 eleventh Federal President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Study of Theology, Honorary doctor of the Theological Faculty
  • Dr. Heinz Kindermann (*1942), Politician, 1959-1961 University of Rostock, 1994-2009 Member of the EU-Parliament
  • Roland Methling (*1954), Politician, current Mayor of Rostock, studied Technical Cybernetics and Automation in Rostock from 1972 on
  • Prof. Dr. Rainer Ortleb (*1944), Computer specialist and politician, 1984 lecturer, Professor of Information processing systems from 1989 on, 1991-1994 Federal Minister of Education and Science
  • Dr. Harald Ringstorff (*1939), Politician, 1960-1965 Study of Chemistry, 1965-1969 assistant lecturer, 1998-2008 Minister-President of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
  • Dr. Harald Terpe (*1954), Member of the Federal Parliament, Politician, 1976-1982 Study of Medicine, 1982-1987 Residency in Medicine, 1987 Doctorate degree, from 1998 on Medical Doctor at the university’s Institute of Pathology, from 2005 Member of the German Bundestag
