University archive

The University of Rostock’s archive is, with more than 3000 metres of files and more than 100 certificates, one of the oldest and largest institutions of its kind in Germany.

The university archive emerged from the archives of the rectorates and deanary archives. In 1878, the inner council issued the first archive regulations and implemented the first archive which was supervised by the rector’s assistant. From 1945 on, an archivist became the head of the archive. She organised the return of those stocks which were stored in other placed during the war period and created several repertories. In the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, the archive acquired many new collections. It was in charge of all university departments. In 1990/91, the archives of the former Navigation school Warnemünde/Wustrow, the teacher training college Güstrow and the teacher training institute Rostock Lichtenhagen assumed.

The university archive is a public archive for research and education at the university, its self-administration and legal certainty. It contributes to the research and communication of the university’s history. For this, the university archive provides services related to its archive material for research and education.

As public institution, the university archive is basically open to everyone who shows a credible interest in research. The archive material is available for use in the user room of the university archive, providing 8 workplaces, during the opening hours.

The archive is directed by Dipl.-Hist. Angela Hartwig. Members of staff are Dipl.-Archivist (FH) Bettina Kleinschmidt and Sylvio Erdmann.
