There are direct connections from Gedser (Denmark), Trelleborg (Sweden), Helsinki, Hanko (Finland) and Klaipeda (Lithuania) offered by Scandlines, TT-Line and Superfast Ferries.
By car
The best way from Hamburg to Rostock is to drive along the motorway A1 to Lübeck and follow the signs to Rostock from there. After the bypass Lübeck you reach the A20 that takes you directly to Rostock Süd. There, you drive towards Rostock-Zentrum via the district Südstadt and along the road Südring. At the end of the street Südring/Am Vögenteich, follow the signs “Universität”.
Coming from Berlin, you have to leave the city northbound first (general
direction: Hamburg, Rostock). Then, you go along the A24 towards Hamburg and follow this direction until you reach motorway junction Wittstock. Turn into motorway A19 there and do not leave it until you reach exit Rostock Ost.
From exit Rostock Ost on, drive towards the city centre (landmark: church spire of St. Petri) and follow the signs “Universität”.
The first day in Rostock
Some important things have to settled during the first day of your stay in Rostock. We recommend you to contact the International Office of the University of Rostock which is located at Kröpeliner Straße 29 in Rostock’s Inner City (see city map) after your arrival. There you will get important information and first guidance regarding your life in Rostock. This can be, for instance, special information on the university, accommodation, the city or events relevant for the next few weeks (intensive course, orientation week, introduction and welcome events).
You can get to the International Office by Taxi (about 5 EUR from Rostock Main Station) or by tram (all trams going towards the city center – go until tram stop “Lange Straße”, time schedule and prices are available at http://www.rsag-online.de). Your luggage (documents and money excluded) can be stored at the main station.
Additional information important for foreign students at the University of Rostock are compiled in the following checklist. If there are things that have remained unclear or there are open questions, you may contact the International Office at any time during the office hours.
