The new role of light and molecule in natural and life sciences
In a world which is becoming ever more complex, innovative or even revolutionary solutions primarily require two things: An extremely high specialization and a conceivably close interaction of various scientific areas. More than ever before, new ideas and technologies are based on interdisciplinary thinking. Further development of the medical sciences requires a continual dialogue with natural and engineering sciences for example with the reconstruction of biological functions. Medicine must often rely on artificial systems based on chemical and physical fundamentals. Also, new materials in nanometer benchmarks, biofunctionalised surfaces or innovative treatment methods with lasers arise from the collaboration of very different disciplines. The same applies for new technologies to win solar energy, new processes to manufacture low-emission and energy saving materials with the help of catalysis or new methods to compile ecologically damaging substances on a larger scale.
Established within the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Research of the University of Rostock, the Department Science and Technology of Life, Light & Matter is meeting these challenges of a highly complex scientific future. For this purpose, we are examining and devising atomic and molecular processes and combining laser optics with life sciences. Thus, fundamental research should develop new concepts for future technologies. Our department, promoted by the state of Mecklenburg- Western Pomerania and the Federal Republic of Germany, is developing a unique focus of research.
Beside its fundamental importance for many areas of science, the research field between light and matter is considered as a growth sector with excellent future potential. Therefore, our first concern is that laboratory results are not just confined to basic research. More than ever before, we are aiming at working closely with companies and non-university institutes in order to implement technological innovations into marketable products and services as quickly as possible.
