Research networks / Competence centres
Research networks are central scientific and interfaculty institutions of the University of Rostock. Their members are scientists of different university institutes and central university institutions dedicated to interdisciplinary research and education.
Research network Um-Welt (WVU)
The WVU joins all university disciplines working on environmental issues, ranging from philosophy to natural sciences, medicine, agricultural and engineering sciences, economy, informatics to law.
The scientists of the association IuK investigate questions of development and application as well as of the consequences of modern information and communication technologies.
International Research Center of Functional Life Science
The International Research Center of Functional Life Science is an interdisciplinary cross-sectional institution of the universities of Rostock and Greifswald that covers the entire spectrum of modern biology, ranging from gene to regulation of cells and tissue, complemented by Life Science Engineering and Bioinformatics.
Center for Life Science Automation - celisca
The Center for Life Science Automation – celisca - is dedicated to interdisciplinary research at the interface between engineering and natural sciences, aiming to process joint interesting questions related to life science automation and to develop automated solutions for laboratory procedures.
Center for Marine Information Systems - CeMarIS
The Center for Marine Information Systems (CeMarIS) is an interdisciplinary research centre of the University of Rostock. Scientists from various universities and departments cooperate in research and development projects with clear focus on IT systems in ship construction, manufacturing and operation.
Biomedical research centre (BMFZ)
The BMFZ offers the most modern research and manufacturing opportunities for spin-offs from the university research areas and for start-ups in the field of biomedicine and biotechnology.

"Frauen für Naturwissenschaft und Technik" of the universities of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
Founded by the state conference of the equal opportunity commissioners of universities and research institutions of the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (LaKoF) to establish profound and efficient structures designed to inform, interest and motivate girls and women in technical and natural science study courses and professions. The competence center's long-term objective is to increase the share of female students in technical, technically oriented and natural sciences subjects and study courses and to improve the career entry chances in those working environments strongly dominated by men so far.
The PZR aims to bundle competences in the new field of Proteom research and to offer this expertise to private enterprises and scientific working team as profound services and consultancy.
Reference and translation center of cardiac stem cell therapy (RTC)
The reference and translation center of cardiac stem cell therapy (RTC) combines the work of the research laboratories of cardiac artificial tissues and organs (FKGO) and the clinic research of the Clinic and Polyclinic of Cardiac Surgery (KHC) of the University of Rostock. Supported by professional translation management, the RTC explores and develops new renewable therapies for cardiovascular diseases. The project is funded by the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the BMBF as well as by business partners.
