KOSMOS – Constructing and organizing a study course in an open system

The University of Rostock won the bid after the tendering procedure “Advancement through Education – open universities” in two rounds with its application “KOSMOS - Constructing and organizing a study course in an open system”. The project was approved with effect from 1.10.2011, thus, being one of the 26 individual and joint applications which were chosen from the 163 submitted applications in total. The project aims to consistently expanding further education while, simultaneously, reforming the initial education. It shall establish opportunities to acquire education in different stages of life and in different learning locations.

By realizing and consolidating these project objectives, the University of Rostock focuses on gradual implementation and consequent advancement of a Livelong Learning culture. The extension of existing Scientific Further Education offers closely interconnected with initial education promotes the concept implementation. This concept intends to increase the quality level, by creating new study formats and by deliberately opening the university for non-traditional students.

Study offers and formats in the core fields of study and education of the faculties are modified by the University of Rostock to reach these objectives. New study opportunities are going to be established. Tailor-made study offers open the university to traditional and non-traditional target groups in all stages of life from age 18 onwards, enables combinations with training or job and accepts that competences are acquired in different learning places.

In January 2012, concepts will have to be prepared and research tasks will have to be assigned at first to strengthen the opening of the universities and to create the preconditions for implementing the concept of Livelong Learning: The research tasks comprise of the topics target group analysis, requirement analysis, accreditation and credit schemes, education and competence consultancy, network building, use of media infrastructures, organization development processes, quality development and financing schemes for further education at universities on a competing market.  From 2015 on, tailor-made study course offers and formats for non-traditional target groups in a newly structured university shall be available an accordance with relevant demand.

In addition to four project employees at the CQA, various staff members will work on the different fields of activities and work packages.
