Study reform - Objectives

The reform efforts at German universities result mainly from the demand for increased internationalisation of university education in Germany and for improving the international compatibility of German university degrees. There are great expectations related to this study structure reform as it is considered as a chance to

  • readjust the education objectives according to modified requirements of working world and science,
  • get a conclusive new concept of study offers based on this,
  • achieve a related new arrangement of curricula and study organisation by implementing bachelor and master study courses as reform instruments.

Whether these expectations will be fulfilled or not depends mainly on the quality of the conceptual and content-related reforms. A consequent, curricular new conception intends

  • to purify study offers and to focus core contents,
  • to balance basics and specialisations as well as compulsory and optional subjects in a new way and
  • to consider subject and cross-subject core and key competences in a better way,

thus, implementing a curriculum diversity and study offers that meet the demands. The implementation of bachelor and master study courses can only be successful if job descriptions, qualification aims and curricula are adapted accordingly and the transition from bachelor to master of the relevant subject can be arranged.
