Heinz Augenstein enrolled at the Saarland University for studying economics as second-chance education after an administrative training. He became the Head of the International Office in 1970 and, two years later, a member of the planning team focussing on study reform (reduction of long-term studies, frequent changes of subject and dropouts). A central student advisory service was established, afterwards a study program for senior citizens and a further education office. These developments were to a large extent part of innovative European or national model projects and resulted into the establishment of the study centre of the Saarland University. Heinz Augenstein is a foundation member of the FEODORA and represented the German universities in the »Employment Group« there. In addition, he was a member of the presidential student advisory team in the University Rectors Conference for many years. He is the author of many publications on student advisory services, distance learning and new media.

He is one of the foundation members of the Academic advisory boards for quality assurance regarding study and further education at the University of Rostock.
