Scholarships (foundations)

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research initiated a website designed to search for scholarships called „Stipendienlotse“, which is a nationwide database. At www.stipendienlotse.de everybody can search for suitable scholarships. In addition, the website provides specific search functions for individuals with handicap.

Germany Scholarship

The „Germany Scholarship“ of the Federal Government is a new national scholarship program which addresses particularly gifted and high-achieving students at German universities. The University of Rostock welcomes and supports this program. The university intends to award the first related scholarships in winter term 2011/2012.

The scholarships worth 300 Euro per month are financed by private contributors (companies, foundations, private persons) and the federal government jointly.

Upgrading Scholarship for persons with occupational experience

The Upgrading Scholarship for persons with occupational experience is a Federal Government funding.

The program supports specialists with vocational training and at least two years of working experience when they intend to start their first university study course.

The application can be submitted even before starting the study course and until the end of the second term. Persons who have worked in their job for many years are invited to submit an application, too.

Cusanuswerk

The task of the Cusanuswerk is the conceptual and financial support for exceptionally gifted German Catholic students in all fields of study at scientific universities and colleges of art and music. Support is granted to all courses of study starting in the second subject-related semester until the first final examination qualifying for a career start. The scholarship holders must agree to an active participation in the educational program of the Cusanuswerk (summer academies, academic student conferences, graduate conferences, general meetings). Prerequisites are exceptional intellectual and scientific abilities. The approval for the selection procedure is based on a recommendation made by a university teacher or a campus minister. Applications from individual students are also accepted. The maximum monthly scholarship amounts to 525 Euro. Book allowance constitutes of a standard 80 Euro monthly sum.

Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt

 

Als eine der größten Stiftungen in Europa fördert die Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt. Jährlich bis zu 60 Promotionsstipendiaten. Gefördert werden alle Nachwuchswissenschaftler, die eine weiterführende Forschungsarbeit auf dem Gebiet des Umweltschutzes anfertigen. Besonders willkommen sind interdisziplinäre Themen, d.h. neben den Natur- und Ingenieurwissenschaften sind auch Bewerbungen aus den Sozial-, Geistes-, Wirtschafts- und Rechtswissenschaften erwünscht.

Evangelisches Studienwerk e.V.

The Evangelisches Studienwerk grants scholarships to gifted protestant students at universities with study courses of more than six semesters. Prerequisites are outstanding achievements and the commitment to take responsibility in society on the basis of protestant principles. The applicant is requested to submit an own application together with an expertise and participates in a two-level recruitment procedure. Application deadline is March 15 and September 15 of each year. The maximum monthly scholarship amounts, depending on the income, to 525 Euro plus 80 Euro book allowance.

Friedrich Ebert Foundation

The Friedrich Ebert Foundation supports students of all study courses with outstanding scientific qualifications, who have an upright moral character and show commitment to society and politics. Scholarship holders are expected to complete their studies in an appropriate time frame and with success. Students must continuously furnish proof of their achievements. Currently, scholarship and book allowance amount to 525 Euro plus 80 Euro book allowance. The application can be submitted informally.

Friedrich Naumann Foundation

The Friedrich Naumann Foundation supports gifted German students and graduates at scientific universities and colleges of art. The support for German students starts in the third subject-related semester. Foreign applicants must come from one of the project countries of the foundation. Support is only granted for PhD projects and postgraduate studies. Inclusion criteria for the scholarship program are exceptional scientific abilities and excellence, upright moral character and the commitment to take responsibility and demonstrate political and social engagement based on liberal principles. Detailed requirements can be referenced in the support guidelines. Application deadlines are May 31 and November 30.

Hanns Seidel Foundation

The Hanns Seidel Foundation provides conceptual and financial support to exceptionally gifted students, who are, at the same time, committed to society and politics in order to enable them to critically and actively contribute to shaping a state based on constitutionality and social welfare under a social system based on freedom and democracy. Applications may be submitted by German students of all study programs, who are officially enrolled at a state-recognized scientific university and/or at a university of fine arts and music. Applications are not accepted from individuals who are enrolled for a second degree or are over 32 years of age. All forms required for the application must be requested from the Studienförderung (study support) of Hanns Seidel Foundation. Application deadlines for students at scientific universities and colleges are January 31 and July 31.

Hans Böckler Foundation

The Hans Böckler Foundation is an association of the German Trade Union for co-determination, research and academic support. The foundation provides conceptual and financial support for studies and PhD programs of committed and gifted employees and children from working-class backgrounds. In addition the foundation awards scholarships for vocational training and education at institutes, where students can receive a university entrance qualification. The Hans Böckler Foundation focuses on the following selection criteria: engagement in trade unions and society has priority over the academic and personal qualifications for the selected study or PhD program.

Heinrich Böll Foundation

The Green Party affiliated Heinrich-Böll Foundation is guided by the basic political principles of democracy, ecology, solidarity and non-violence. Its work is focussed on sustainable development and international environmental politics, future of labour and socio-democratic participation, human rights, future of democracy and global governance, gender mainstreaming and feminism, migration, art, culture and media.
The scholarship and support program of the Heinrich-Böll Foundation approves 80 to 100 applications every year for gifted German and foreign students and graduates from all branches of study, who have shown outstanding achievements and proven commitment to take responsibility and who are actively engaged to implement the objectives of the foundation. Applicants must be enrolled at state-recognized or state-owned institutions of higher education in Germany, have completed their basic studies and must be still in their standard period of study (Regelstudienzeit) at the time the scholarship payment begins. Applicants for PhD programs or post-graduate studies must have obtained the qualification required for PhD program or post-graduate study admission and/or individuals with a foreign university leaving certificate must be admitted for a PhD program or post-graduate studies at an institution of higher education of Germany. Deadlines for brief applications: March 1 / Sept 1; deadline for foreign applicants: Sept 1.

Konrad Adenauer Foundation

The Konrad Adenauer Foundation awards scholarships to students of exceptional academic achievement and thus prepares them for a career in public life, science, business and international organisations. German and foreign students, who are not older than 32 years of age, are eligible to receive scholarship support. Students must agree to participate in summer academies and to demonstrate outstanding achievements in their studies. The amount of scholarship payments depends on the income. Application deadlines are January 15 for admissions for the summer semester and July 15 for admissions for the winter semester. Applicants must submit an expertise of the university teacher in order to evaluate the academic qualification and an additional expertise to evaluate the personal qualification.

Rosa Luxemburg Foundation

The Rosa Luxemburg Foundation considers itself part of the political movement for democratic socialism. The foundation was recognized in 1992 as party-affiliated, nationwide foundation by the Party of Democratic Socialism (Partei des Demokratischen Sozialismus (PDS), now „The Left“ (Die Linke). 

The Rosa Luxemburg Foundation is actively involved in political education aimed at the democratization of political will, social justice and solidarity and at overcoming patriarchal, ethnic and national oppression.

Foundation of German Business

The Foundation of German Business (sdw) supports students and post-graduates, who are exceptionally gifted, achieved outstanding qualifications, take an active role in society and are able to look beyond their own special subjects. Scholarship requirements can be referenced at the website of the foundation. Currently scholarship and book allowance amount to 605 Euro per month for students and up to 1020 Euro per month for post-graduates. The foundation regularly organises interesting seminars and summer academies and sponsors foreign studies abroad. Interested individuals should contact the tutor at their institution of higher education first and will, based on the tutor’s recommendation, be invited to a recruitment seminar.

German National Academic Foundation

he German National Academic Foundation has set itself the target to support the higher education of young people, who’s excellent scientific and artistic abilities justify expectations of outstanding achievements for the benefit of all people. High-school graduates are recommended by their headmasters, students at schoola are admitted in the course of competitions. University students are directly recommended by their university teachers. Own applications are only admitted for special study projects under the scholarship programs. Recommendations are admitted at any time. The applicants are invited to two detailed interviews and one recruitment seminar. Selection criteria are not based on the income situation of the applicant. The basic scholarship amounts to a maximum of 525 Euro.
