Subjects and objectives of the study course

The research oriented M.A. Ancient sciences teaches comprehensive competences on independent scientific work based on a profound understanding of methods and contents of the four disciplines Ancient history, Greek studies, Classical Archaeology or Latin studies (in accordance with the chosen focus), interdisciplinary embedded into the field Ancient studies.

The focus Ancient history trains, working exemplary, the skills to a) analyze complicated texts precisely and quickly and to allocate them into the related cultural context and b) consider complex facts theoretically and decompose them into defined aspects to understand their model character and to determine precise terms. The thematic focus is put on political and historical anthropology, first and foremost the political culture of the Ancient times (collective decisions via public debates, ritualization of political communication, changing forms of government, legitimization and critics of forms of government, relation between micro-social perspectives and macro-institutional framework conditions).

The focus Greek studies develops the language and interpretational skills to analyze intellectually challenging ancient Greek texts of every period of time and text genre. Central themes are Homer and Hesiod, the attic tragedy, the Greek philosophers and philosophical school, rhetoric and Greek historians, in every case from a certain thematic perspective. The critical analysis of reception and interpretation of history ensures the high quality of this interpretation and intensifies the reference to contemporary issues.

The focus Classical Archaeology teaches how to investigate the material culture of the Greek-Roman Ancient history in an exemplary process. By dealing with latest archaeological research issues, the archaeological special knowledge will be deepened, methodological expertise will be extended, skills regarding issuing scientific texts and using visual presentation media as much as the general visual competence will be improved. Because of its cultural science relevance, the advanced work on ancient and post-ancient reception history is another central issue of this study course.

The focus Latin studies develops and consolidates language and philological-methodical competences to enable autonomous literature-scientific work on ancient Latin texts. This includes the critical reflection of scientific literature, the increasingly autonomous interpretation of Latin texts and an own determination and discussion of results on the basis of hermeneutic reflection. In addition to linguistic and literature science competence, the ability to analyze cultural contexts precisely will be trained, i.e. to investigate the material, social and historical conditions of text production and reception.
