Enrolment

There is an admission restriction for foreign students. Thus, an application is required. It has to be submitted between 1. June and 15. July (or from the 1. December to the 15. January for Summer term). The application form You will find at: application form.

Admission requirements:

(1) As main admission requirement for the master study course British and American Transcultural Studies, a first job-qualifying university degree has to be proven.

(2)  The admission for the master study course British and American Transcultural Studies at the University of Rostock is subject to the following additional conditions:

1.  Evidence of least 60 credit points in the field English/American studies has to be provided.

2. The first university degree has to be completed with at least final mark „good“ (2.5 minimum).  

3.  Applicants have to proof a very good proficiency of English in reading and writing on level C 1 (Joint European Reference system). Native speakers are exempted from this obligation.

4. Foreign student applicants have to proof sufficient proficiency in German language on the C1 level of the Joint European Reference system. DSH2 and TestDaF TDN4 or equivalent certificates are accepted as certificates. Native speakers are exempted from this obligation.

(3)     The admission requirements according to section 2 have to be proven with certified copies of the related certificates enclosed to the application for admission to study in this study course.  The examination board decides upon the acceptance of the proof. The acknowledgement of sufficient proficiency of German language according to section 2, pt. 4 is given by the examination board upon request on the basis of recommendations given by the University of Rostock’s language centre.

(4)     In case the leaving certificate is not available before the due date, the admission procedure will be implemented according to the university statutes for Admission to study (URZS) in its currently valid version.

(5) In individual cases, applicants who do not meet the criteria listed under section 2 can be accepted in case they are expected to be particularly qualified for the master study course. Related matriculation applications have an enclosure (one page) that describes why the candidate has chosen this study course and considers him/herself to be qualified for it. These applications are presented to the examination board for decision. The examination board may decide to invite the applicant for a personal clarifying meeting. Admission can also be given under certain conditions.

(6) A stay abroad in an English-speaking country is not compulsory but highly recommended and can be taken into consideration when evaluating the application.

 

Subject and objectives of the study course

The research-oriented master study course comprises of studies of the English language and Anglophone literatures and cultures in their historical development and contemporary diversity.

Specialization modules in the fields Linguistics, Literature sciences and Cultural studies are offered.

The theoretical and methodical skills regarding analyses of complex cultural phenomena and procedures are applied and intensified in a practical module.

The degree qualifies for a wide range of occupational fields and options in science, education, cultural management, marketing, tourism, public relations and media.
