There is an admission restriction for this study course so that an application is required. It has to be submitted online between 1. June and 15. July.
Study subject and objectives
The study course English and American studies deals with the language and literature of the English-speaking world. Great Britain (English studies) and North America (American studies) are in the focus here.
Study course sections
Language practice
Practical language courses, basic course (Towards Proficiency), special courses (Conversation, Reading, Writing, Translation a. o.)
Literature sciences
Literature of England, Scotland, Wales' and Ireland;
North-American Literature (USA and Canada) and selected post-colonial literatures (e. g. Australia, India, Caribbean).
Cultural Studies
Various cultural study aspects of Great Britain, Ireland and North America (History, politics, religion, media landscape, ethnic minorities a. m. o.)
Linguistics
Analysis of sentences, speaking intention, text types; description of language versions (British, American English; Female language, Youth language); Historical development of English language.
Study structure
English as first or second subjectEnglish can be studies as two-subject bachelor first or second subject and combined will all two-subject bachelor subjects. For the status first subject, professional studies and communicative skills are taught. The second subject studies and interdisciplinary studies (IDS) are added here.
Stay abroad
All students are urgently recommended to spend at least one term abroad, i.e. in an English-speaking country.
