Enrolment
There is an admission restriction for foreign students. Thus, an application is required. It has to be submitted between 1. June and 15. July (or from the 1. December to the 15. January for Summer term). The application form You will find at: application form.
Admission requirements:
(1) As main admission requirement for the master study course Historical cultures of knowledge, a first job-qualifying university degree has to be proven.
(2) The admission for the master study course Historical cultures of knowledge at the University of Rostock is subject to the following conditions:
1. At least 60 credit points gained in the subject history have to proven. The examination board decides on the acceptance.
2. Applicants have to have graduated in their first job-qualifying studies at least with mark „good“.
3. Applicants have to proof English proficiency according to level B2 of the Joint European Reference system. Native speakers are exempted from this obligation.
4. Applicants have to have the Latin proficiency certificate (Latinum).
5. Foreign applicants have to proof proficiency of German according to level C1 of Joint European Reference system. Native speakers are exempted from this obligation.
(3) The admission requirements according to section 2 have to be proven with certified copies of the related certificates enclosed to the application for admission to study in this study course. The examination board decides upon the acceptance of the proof. The acknowledgement of sufficient proficiency of German language according to section 2, pt. 4 is given by the examination board upon request on the basis of recommendations given by the University of Rostock’s language centre.
(4) In case the Master study course is started immediately after completing the previous studies and, thus, the leaving certificate is not available before the application deadline, the admission procedure will based be on the University of Rostock’s statutes on admission for studying (URZS) in its currently valid version.
(5) In individual cases, applicants who do not meet the criteria listed under section 2 can be accepted in case they are expected to be particularly qualified for the master study course. Related matriculation applications have an enclosure (one page) that describes why the candidate has chosen this study course and considers him/herself to be qualified for it. These applications are presented to the examination board for decision. The examination board may decide to invite the applicant for a personal clarifying meeting. Admission can also be given under certain conditions.
Subjects and objectives of the study course
The study course aims to teaching historicity and cultural psychology of knowledge. The students get qualified to analyze knowledge as time-specific result of social communication processes with regard to their genesis, context and carriers and their social distribution, validity and range. Based on these, they are systematically guided when elaborating their master thesis.
Currently, there are three main research fields:
1. Media of knowledge: traditions, living situations
2. Knowledge carriers: Groups, institutions
3. Knowledge practices: the public, distribution
The Master study course “Historical cultures of knowledge” qualifies for relevant historical professions, as archivist, librarian or documentalist.
The degree is oriented to a wide range of occupational profiles and fields, including, apart from a scientific study or teaching career, the entire field of extracurricular further education and the planning, evaluation and accompanying research in the fields of politics, media, culture and public relations.
