Study content and objectives
Two thirds of our planet is characterized by oceans and coastal regions. Still and despite of the technological and scientific progress of the last decades, this giant habitat has not been explored very much in many areas. Marine biology with its high interdisciplinary dimension is one of the most interesting and fascinating subjects within the natural sciences. An education in marine biology is completed by a research and application oriented qualification to contribute to scientifically and socially relevant questions related to global climate change, eutrophication or sea pollution as well at to solving these problems.
During the first three terms, 9 marine biology modules (habitat sea, substance cycles I, ecophysiology of aquatic organisms, phycology, marine animals, substance cycles II, regional marine ecology, microbial and molecular ecology, advanced module) and a non-biological module (physical, chemical, geological and statistic principles) have to be attended. During the third term, students have specialization options by attending modules on regional marine ecology plus advanced module, which are closely interlinked with research activity of university and associated institutions. During the 4th term, the master thesis will be elaborated.
