Enrolment

There is an admission restriction for foreign students. Thus, an application is required. It has to be submitted between 1. June and 15. July (Winter term) and between 1.December and 15. January (Summer term). The application form You will find at: application form.

(1)   As main admission requirement for the Master study course Mathematics, a first job-qualifying university degree in Mathematics has to be proven.

(2)   The admission for the master study course Mathematics at the University of Rostock is subject to the following additional conditions that differ for the study course Mathematics and Technomathematics:

1.        At least 120 credit points gained in Mathematics during the first job-qualifying studies have to be proven. For the study course Technomathematics, at least 108 credit points in the field of Mathematics and at least 24 credit points related to the engineering field of the first job-qualifying studies have to be proven. The decision upon the acceptance is made by the examination board.

2.        Sufficient proficiency of English has to be proven by the applicant, either by a certificate on language level B2 of the Joint European Reference system or by an at least one-year stay abroad in an English speaking country or equivalent performances. Native speakers are exempted from this obligation.

3.        For foreign students have to prove sufficient proficiency of German. Sufficient for all natural science studies at the University of Rostock is language level DSH-1 or an at least 3 year stay abroad in a German-speaking country or equivalent performances. Native speakers are exempted from this obligation.

(3)   The admission requirements according to section 2 have to be proven with certified copies of the related certificates enclosed to the application for admission to study in this study course.  The examination board decides upon the acceptance of the proof. The acknowledgement of sufficient proficiency of German language according to section 2, pt. 4 is given by the examination board upon request on the basis of recommendations given by the University of Rostock’s language centre.

(4)   In case the Master study course shall be started immediately after completing the previous studies and, thus, the leaving certificate is not available before the application deadline, the admission procedure will based on the University of Rostock’s statutes on admission for studying (URZS) in its currently valid version.

(5)   In individual cases, applicants who do not meet the criteria listed under section 2 can be accepted in case they are expected to be particularly qualified for the master study course. Related matriculation applications have an enclosure (one page) that describes why the candidate has chosen this study course and considers him/herself to be qualified for it. These applications are presented to the examination board for decision. The examination board may decide to invite the applicant for a personal clarifying meeting. Admission can also be given under certain conditions.

Study subject and objectives

The master study course Mathematics admits two differentiated fields of study:

- Mathematics
- Technomathematics with specialisations Informatics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering


Both study courses teach profound mathematical knowledge and basic principles of one natural science or engineering subject. The students get qualified to work according to an interdisciplinary scientific approach. The study course was developed in cooperation with the Faculty of Engineering sciences and is a research-oriented one.
