Study content and objectives

The bachelor/master study course „Medical Biotechnology“, taught at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Rostock, combines contents and tasks of experimental medicine with the methodology of molecular biology, cell biology and genomics. In cooperation with the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Informatics and Electrical Engineering of the University of Rostock, a substantiated and wide-ranging education as „Bachelor or Master of Science (B. / M. Sc.)“ is offered here.

Graduates from both study courses shall obtain a specific qualification to work in research fields at the interfaces between clinical and basic scientific issues. Thus, the Faculty of Medicine takes the fact into account, that the traditional borders between the biomedical disciplines lost importance. In addition, it offers a future-oriented study course for bioscientists who intend to work in medical research for industry, authorities or universities.

The study course is characterised by a high share of practical education due to practical courses and practical trainings in biotechnological companies. Thus, skills relevant for the first steps of their later professional career are imparted to the graduates of the study course. This allows reaching another stated aim of the study course, i. e. to teach those skills to the graduates that enable them to apply successfully for attractive positions.
