Enrolment

There is an admission restriction for foreign students. Thus, an application is required. It has to be submitted between 1. May and 15. July. The application form You will find at: application form.

Admission requirements:

(1)      As main admission requirement for the study course Microbiology and Biochemistry a first job-qualifying university degree in Biosciences has to be proven.

(2)     The admission for the master study course Microbiology and Biochemistry at the University of Rostock is subject to the following additional conditions:

1. The first job-qualifying university degree has to be completed at least with mark 3.0.

2. For foreign students, sufficient proficiency of German corresponding with level C1 of the Joint European Reference system has to be proven. Native speakers are exempted from this obligation.

(3)     The admission requirements according to section 2 have to be proven with certified copies of the related certificates enclosed to the application for admission to study in this study course.  The examination board decides upon the acceptance of the proof. The acknowledgement of sufficient proficiency of German language according to section 2, pt. 4 is given by the examination board upon request on the basis of recommendations given by the University of Rostock’s language centre.

(4)     In case the Master study course shall be started immediately after completing the previous studies and, thus, the leaving certificate is not available before the application deadline, the admission procedure will based on the University of Rostock’s statutes on admission for studying (URZS) in its currently valid version.

Study subject and objectives

The master study course “Microbiology and Biochemistry” is consecutively based on the corresponding bachelor education in the field Biosciences. It deepens and ensures a profound scientific education in the fields Microbiology and Biochemistry.  The research-oriented study course shall provide knowledge, skill and experiences that qualify to start a professional career or a dissertation. Potential fields of work for the graduates of the master study course “Microbiology and biochemistry” are in biomedical research, biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry. Such jobs comprise, among others, the planning and implementation of scientific investigations but also consultancy regarding the implementation of biologically relevant measures in economy and administration.  The study course will qualify the students to recognize biological problems, to elaborate reasonable solution approaches and to implement them accordingly.  In their, usually experimental, master thesis, students have to proof that they have these skills, particularly regarding the subject-related range of methods.

 

General and subject-oriented objectives of the studies are, among others, the acquisition of

-        Skills in selected fields of microbiology and biochemistry in theory and practice

-        Knowledge on scientific methods and the ability to apply them;

-        Ability to understand, present, evaluate and interpret data deriving from experiments;

-        Ability to use and evaluate scientific literature and other sources of information, such as databases;

-        Ability to present research results in writing, orally and graphically.

 

With the master degree, the basic prerequisites for further scientific qualification are obtained. The degree Master of Science in the fields Microbiology and Biochemistry is a prerequisite for starting subsequents dissertation studies which focus on advancing the autonomous scientific aspects.
