Content and objectives of the studies

The study course Physics offers an entry to fundamental knowledge on processes in our surrounding nature. It is this knowledge that contributes significantly to our conception of the world. Thus, Physics is mainly a science motivated by the human desire for knowledge. As fundamental science, Physics provides important knowledge on the structure of matter and resulting material characteristics. The entire technological development profits from these research results and, thus, many economic sectors are influenced by it very directly and in a practical way. Considering this, a physician has to be skilled to work scientifically as much as to handle various kinds of measurement and evaluation technology. The adequate use of information processing methods in research and development is one of the physician’s “hand tools” these days.

The study course comprises of six terms and is divided into the following fields

  • Experimental physics (11 obligatory modules)
  • Theoretical Physics (6 obligatory modules)
  • Mathematics (5 obligatory modules)
  • Non-physical elective field

The optional fields I and II comprise of the principles of chemistry and informatics while both modules have to be chosen from the same subject. Studying these modules aims to provide a broad natural scientific basis for the student’s knowledge and to extent the career options. The optional field III comprises of the basic principles of chemistry, biology and informatics. In optional field IV, one module from the „soft skills“ offered by the University of Rostock has to be chosen. This might be, for instance, a module on presentation techniques, presentation opportunities and language skills. Optional field V is related to fields of natural sciences and mathematics, informatics, technical sciences and medicine. This variety of options enables the students to gain additional competences and, thus, to extent their career options.
