Enrolment
There is an admission restriction for foreign students. Thus, an application is required. It has to be submitted between 1. June and 15. July or if you plan to start your studies in summer term, you have to enrol between 1. December and 15. January.

Admission requirements
(1) As main admission requirement for the master study course Political sciences with focus on Identity and Area Studies (Master), a first job-qualifying university degree in humanities, social sciences, political sciences or law has to be proven.
(2) The admission for the master study course Political sciences with focus Identity and Area Studies (Master) at the University of Rostock is subject to the following additional conditions:
1. One examination passed at least with mark good (2.3) in a bachelor study course on humanities, law, social sciences, political sciences or business sciences or a first state examination in law passed at least with mark “satisfactory”.
2. Applicants have to provide evidence of appropriate proficiency of French or Russian or Spanish or Swedish language. Except of English, these are relevant for the advanced module related to the term abroad. As sufficient proficiency of English language are considered to be quality level B2 of the GER or a comparable degree at the University of Rostock. For other languages than those listed above, the quality level B1 of the GER or a comparable degree are considered to be proofs of appropriate skills. Native speakers are exempted from this obligation.
3. Foreign applicants have to proof an adequate proficiency of German (Joint European Reference system). DSH-2 respectively TestDaF TCN 4 or a stay in a German-speaking country for at least 3 years are accepted a proof of German language proficiency at the University of Rostock. Native speakers are exempted from this obligation.
(3) The admission requirements according to section 2 have to be proven with certified copies of the related certificates enclosed to the application for admission to study in this study course. The examination board decides upon the acceptance of the proof. The acknowledgement of sufficient proficiency of German language according to section 2, pt. 2 and 3 is given by the examination board upon request on the basis of recommendations given by the University of Rostock’s language centre.
(4) Complementing, the admission procedure is oriented to the statutes of the University of Rostock an Admission to study (URZS) in its currently valid version.
(5) In individual cases, applicants who do not meet the criteria listed under section 2, No. 1 and 3 can be accepted in case they are expected to be particularly qualified for the master study course. Related matriculation applications have an enclosure (one page) that describes why the candidate has chosen this study course and considers him/herself to be qualified for it. These applications are presented to the examination board for decision. The examination board may decide to invite the applicant for a personal clarifying meeting. Admission can also be given under certain conditions.
Study subject content and objectives
The master study course “Political sciences with focus on Identity and Area studies” is a specialising, research-oriented study course resulting into another job-qualifying degree for professions in social sciences, political sciences and humanities, politics and administration, media and development cooperation, foreign cultural policy and international organisations.
The study course analyses the theoretical basics of identity formation as well as identity formation processes on the example of different areas (Latin America, Southern Asia, Baltic Sea Region/Eastern Europe). Thus, the students shall acquire an analytical and theoretical basis for deep scientific work on Area Studies. Terms abroad shall provide deeper knowledge on lective identities or on one of the abovementioned areas. In addition, the stay abroad serves for acquiring additional language skills and scientific mobility. To prepare the students adequately, related language courses provided by the university’s language centre are obligatory for the students.
