Content and objectives of the studies
Religion is not only a „private matter“ but present historically significant reality in the public spheres of our contemporary culture, equally in a specific and multiform way. Logically, it is relevant for religious research as “Religion in context” – a research that has to be executed as a multiperspective and interdisciplinary approach. Theology is the reference science of this bachelor study course “Religion in context” and, accordingly, the content is mainly, but not exclusively, oriented to theological problems.
Theology contributes to the academic discourse on cultural self-interpretation and interpretation of the world. Jointly with other cultural science disciplines, it elaborates questions and orientations related to the society as a whole and its future. In this respect, theology is not limited to preserving and passing on the Jewish-Christian tradition but falls back to the critical resources of this traditions to broach the issue of current and future problems in our society, to analyze and to process it. This happens on the basis of an interdisciplinary orientation with willingness to extent the traditional perspective further and further and to react accordingly flexible to new challenges. Here, the religious-scientific problems become more and more crucial. They are mainly oriented to cultural-scientific paradigms of religious research with a primarily descriptive approach. Within the bachelor study course Religion in Context, problems deriving from the traditions of two disciplines – normative, theological included, and descriptive, religious-scientific – are referred to each other which, however, demands a thorough differentiation between both of them.
The bachelor study course Religion in Context results into an academic degree that is oriented to several special professions. It qualifies the graduates to work scientifically and enables them work outside the scientific context in the narrower sense, gives them theological judgment, religious education and the skill to develop rational solution strategies. The study degree bachelor allows them to start a professional career quickly. Alternatively, they may change for continuing study courses (Master, teaching degree, diploma) afterwards.
The subject Religion in Context comprises of six sub-fields:
- Old testament
- New testament
- Ecclesiastical history
- Systematic Theology
- Practical Theology/Religious education
- Religious history (Religious sciences).
