Content and objectives of the studies

The bachelor study course Social Sciences prepares, due its interlinked perspective on living conditions in a demographically changing society, to various professions. The fields of work this first job-qualifying bachelor degree qualifies for in particular are planning, organization, further education, market and opinion research, consultancy for administrations, companies, chambers and associations, economic, social and political institutions in Germany and abroad.

The independent study course Social sciences is jointly supported by the subjects Sociology, Demography and Political Economics. In its combination, it is unique in Germany. There are many connections to other subjects regarding content and methodology. One, exemplary, obvious connection is the “Demographic change” as one of the thematic focuses of the study course. While the subject Demography teaches profound knowledge on content, course and forms of social change, Sociology and Political economics investigate its reasons and consequences from their special perspectives.

In the context of analyzing the effects demographic changes have on the society as a whole and on the economy, a differentiated and coherent picture of the current social development in Germany and Europe is provided. The methodical commonalities of the three subjects are in the field of standardized empirical social research methods – consequently, their share in the studies is very high. To establish practice-oriented skills on this basis, the methodological training is combined with compulsory or optional research traineeships which are clearly application-oriented. Social and media competences are acquired here in group works and by using modern presentation technologies.
