Enrolment Master

There is an admission restriction for foreign students. Thus, an application is required. It has to be submitted between 1. June and 15. July. The application form You will find at: application form.

Admission requirements: 
 
(1) Access to the Master's Program in Sociology at the University of Rostock is connected to the following entry requirements:

1. University degree (Bachelor, Diplom, Master) or equivalent degree.

2. The Universty degree according to point 1 with the final note "Good". 

3. Verification of 60 LP (ECTS-Points) or equivalent credits in Sociology and Methods (including Mathematics, Statistics and Methodological Foundations of Sociology), of which at least 36 credits in Sociology, 12 credits in Methods or Methodological Foundations of Sociology and 12 credits in Statistical Methods.

A maximum of 12 credits can be made up during the first year of the master program; on the recognition of the subject decides the representive of the institution.

4.  Foreign applicants have to proof a proficiency of German on level C1 (Joint European Reference system). DSH 2 and TestDaF TCN 4 or equivalent proofs are accepted. Native speakers are released from this obligation.

Study subject and objectives

The master study course sociology is a research-oriented study course. It a offers a qualified overview how contents of the subject are interlinked and what related methods exist. At the same time, it teaches deeper technical knowledge on the chosen specialisation areas, primarily society analysis under the conditions of social change. Students shall be enabled to understand the process from recognizing social problems to analyze them theoretically and empirically and to elaborate of socio-political recommendations. The acquired methodical and content knowledge will enable them to approach to new questions in a theoretically substantiated way and to elaborate solutions autonomously.

The competences the students acquire during this master study course include, among others: An independent data research and analysis, the critical reflection and application of existing approaches and solutions, the mental mobility, the determination of new objectives, the elaboration of presentations, reports and expertises. The obligatory lectures of the integrated dissertation course provide even more details on theories and methods of the subject and open the path to own scientific working.

Parallel to this, they enhance the technical knowledge regarding the field of demographic change. Thus, students shall get competent to contribute to interdisciplinary debates on demographic change as process at the interface of demographic, economic and social processes.
