Study courses according to degrees

The first study course is a general one (Bachelor, Diploma or State examination) which requires a university entrance qualification (e.g. Abitur). These study courses result into a first academic degree that entitles to start a subsequent study course (Master/ Magister).

The bachelor degrees awarded at the University of Rostock are the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) for engineering and natural sciences and the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) for humanities, business sciences, social sciences and linguistics. The Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) is awarded in law. In addition, the following differentiation applies for the University of Rostock:

The degree State Examination is related to subjects where the state reserves the right to regulate the access to the professions or the public service itself by a state exam (e. g. for physicians, lawyers, judges, prosecutors, teachers). In general (physicians excluded), there is, after the related studies (1. State Examination), a preparatory period (internship) completed by a 2. State Examination.

The Master degree corresponds with the Bachelor degree. Analogous to the Bachelor degree, there are the Master of Science (M.Sc.) in engineering and natural sciences and the Master of Arts (M.A.) in humanities, business sciences, social sciences and linguistics at the University of Rostock. The following differentiation applies hier, too

  • One-subject Master studies, i. e. studying one subject fulltime and
  • Two-subject Master studies !expiring! (also referred to as Magister Artium), i. e. studying a first and a second subject, each of them autonomously pro rata. Here, all those subjects available for two-subject studies can be combined in various ways.

The Master study courses continue the first studies (normally Bachelor studies) and require a related degree. Thus, the master degree is of higher value than the bachelor degree. Master studies can also be started after diploma or state examination. Still, the degrees Diploma and State Examination are, due to their higher scope than bachelor studies, equivalent to the Master degree.

Consecutive master study courses build on certain bachelor studies with related content, deepen them further and serve as a specialisation of one part of the subject (i. e. Bachelor Biosciences > Master Marine biology). They may expand the bachelor studies even interdisciplinary.

In comparison, non-consecutive and further educating master study courses require no certain content of the previous studies. Where appropriate, relevant professional experience might be needed.

A double degree is optionally offered for some study courses. Here, one part of the studies can be undertaken at a foreign partner university within a special cooperation program (e. g. 2 terms). Of course, there are various other options for studying abroad, but usually without acquiring a degree at the foreign university.

Double-Degree-Programmes are currently arranged with the University of Klausenburg (Romania): Klausenburg

The dissertation is, with few exceptions, is a precondition for a scientific career and, as a rule, requires other university degrees. In many cases, a minimum grade has to be proven, too.Elaborating a dissertation needs usually takes several years – with the exception of medical dissertations that are often completed even during the studying period. A dissertation should be an independent scientific achievement that provides significant new results.
