Field of study "Linguistics/ Humanities"

The field of study Linguistics/Humanities includes, apart from classical humanities as philosophy or history, linguistics, as German or English language and theology. Students from this field work on understanding and interpreting so-called cultural achievements of human beings as, for instance, language, literature, art, philosophy, religion, moral, institutions (family, state). These are related to cultural, mental, media, social, historical and political phenomena, which will be analyzed and evaluated. Persons interested in studying humanities should consider that a many texts will be read, analyzed and processed here. Thus, joy and endurance with reading, a distinct feeling for language and a good comprehension of language are essential qualifications these students should have.  In addition, studying in this field requires a substantial interest in and understanding of history and the ability to familiarize oneself with new topics and to apply acquired knowledge interdisciplinary.

Humanities study courses do not result into individual specific job profiles. Rather, humanities scholars have skills relevant for various professional activities: in communication processes, regarding elaboration, analysis, interpretation and processing of texts, regarding consideration and evaluation of events in their historical and theological context, in politics and within tasks that require an analytical approach to society and its social and demographical groups and phenomena. Here, most different issues can be in the focus as a selection of the topics investigated in this field of study at the University of Rostock shows: archaeological excavations in the Mediterranean Sea region, behavior and giftedness of children, GDR history, population structures and migration in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, youth biographies and youth culture in Germany’s Muslim scene, physical and mental determinants for fitness in old age.

The University of Rostock offer humanities bachelor study courses as combination study courses. A study courses comprises of first and second subject here (2-subject bachelor). All humanities subjects as well as the social science subjects Politics and Sociology can be combined freely here (with few exceptions).
