Field of study “Teaching professions”

The profession of a teacher as well as the institution school have learned profound changes within the last few years. School is not only a place of the lesson and the knowledge arrangement today, she is an essential day room for a growing number of children and teenagers at the same time. Today, the meeting of young people with different study and competitivenesses as well as different competences and talents socialized differently and stamped culturally leads to other requirements on the qualification of teachers than earlier. It will more strongly than till now be part of her tasks promoting pupils with quite individual studying needs, supporting study and behavior impaired children and arranging important social value orientations.
Prospective teachers are expected to have not only technical expertise but also a high level of social competence, assertiveness and a certain degree of creativity, e.g. for designing lessons. The University of Rostock offers a teaching education for four different teaching profession types, each of them completed with the First State Examination. The standard period of study is nine to ten semesters. During their studies, they acquire subject-related and didactic knowledge. In addition, pedagogical and psychological competences are taught. Practical studies in school and practical trainings as well as their documentation are other aspects of these study courses. The subsequent work as trainee teacher (Referendariat) takes, different from state to state, 1 to 2 years.
The University of Rostock offers five teaching study courses that differ according to the related type of school:
- Teaching profession for primary schools (from winter term 2012 on) (GH)
- Teaching profession for regional schools (from 2012)
- Teaching profession for extended secondary schools (Gy)
- Teaching profession for Special Education (So)
- Business pedagogics
Particularly noteworthy is the part of teacher education at the University of Rostock that is implemented in cooperation with the University of Music and Theatre. It allows the students to choose between the subjects music and performing arts, depending on the type of teaching profession.
In addition, the University of Rostock offers the study course Business Pedagogics (Bachelor and Master). Students may choose a specialization that qualifies them to teach at vocational schools.
All teaching study courses have a standard period of study of 9 semesters and are to be completed with the 1st State Examination. With this, you are enabled to apply for a Referendariat in any federal state of your choice.
Important: New admission modalities for students who wish to change their study subject
- 1. Changing subject in a teaching profession study course is only possible if both subjects start with their first term after the new education.
- 2. In case the old education shall be continued, the new subject can only be started in a higher semester if this study performance is taken into account.
- 3. For the first semester, an application for both subjects is required in case of admission restrictions.
- 4. Advanced students have to submit an application for the relevant subject (in case of admission restrictions).
Self-analysis procedure cct-germany
Important: The teaching subject study course is undergoing significant changes. Based on the new teacher training law adopted on 4.7.2011, structure and content of the studies will be modified step by step.
NEW: From winter term 2012/13 on, passing the self-analysis procedure - www.cct-germany.de - is obligatory requirement for enrolment as teaching student.

The teacher training is completed by the First and/or Second State Examination which is not conducted by the University of Rostock but by the Teacher Examination Office (Lehrerprüfungsamt - LPA) on behalf of the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern at the State Institute for School and Training (Landesinstitut für Schule und Ausbildung - L.I.S.A.). Internships
The course of study envisages three internships:
1. Social internship
Internship in one block, over three weeks; should be made during the semester break of the basic studies
2. School internship I
Internship in one block, over four weeks, not to be made at the school type of the envisaged teaching degree, should be made during the semester break of the basic studies
3. School internship II
Internship in one block, over four weeks, at the school type of the envisaged teaching degree, should be made during the main study period
