General and subject-specific requirements / Studying without Abitur

General requirements

Germans and so-called "educational Germans“ need a valid university entrance qualification to start an undergraduate study course at the University of Rostock. This can be obtained by passing the general (Abitur) or subject-specific university entrance diploma. Details on this are determined by the  quality regulations of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern .

Educational Germans are foreigners or stateless persons who have obtained their university entrance qualification in Germany or at a German school abroad.

Some study courses or subjects are admission restricted and require a prior admission or other conditions to be fulfilled (see subject-specific requirements).

Studying without Abitur

(According to the  entrance examination regulations dated 23. October 2003, enacted by the Academic Senate of the University of Rostock, based on the State University Law - LHG M-V dated 5. July 2002 )

If you work but do not have a university entrance qualification, you may pass a qualification examination which is offered for all study courses of the University of Rostock. The examination serves for testing your educational background and aptitude regarding the chosen study course.

In order to be admitted to the qualification examination, the applicant has to have worked for at least five year or to prove a completed vocational training and at least 3 years of work experience. Consider that training and work have to have a direct factual connection to the chosen course of study.

A passed qualification examination entitles you to study at the University of Rostock in the course of study stated in the certificate. The university entrance entitlement applies without temporal limitation. However, this passed examination does not mean that you have a claim on a place to study. We kindly ask you to use the online application for admission restricted study courses, from 01. June to 15. July of the year. The online enrolment for study courses with unlimited admission has to be done from 01. August to 30. September of the year.

The qualification examinations take place twice a year. For participating in the examination during the summer term, you have to file your application between 01. February and 01. April, as the examinations take place before the 15. June. For the qualification examination during the winter term, the period 01. August until 01. October applies. Here, the examination takes place before the 15. December.
