The traditional fields of the natural sciences - physics, chemistry and biology - as well as mathematics, are the subjects of research and teaching at this faculty's four institutes. The faculty currently has a unique position throughout Germany in that it offers courses of study in atmospheric physics and physical oceanography. In particular, the fields of environmental and marine chemistry and analysis, analytic and numerical treatment of partial differential equations, optics and laser physics, as well as atmospheric physics and physical oceanography, are some of the primary areas of research at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.
