In addition to the habilitation, which is recognized differently depending on the discipline, the assistant professorship has established throughout Germany as another career path to becoming a permanent appointment as professor. The aim of the University of Rostock is to strengthen the assistant professorship as a career path to a permanent appointment as professor and to increase the attractiveness of employment conditions with regard to the planning of career paths.
Assistant professorships are established in salary on scale W1 and have a teaching working requirement of four to six hours of thaught time per week per semester. Assistant professors are faculty members. Their status corresponds to that of the other professors, which also includes the scientific independence: According to § 57 paragraph 1 of the state higher education act "professors [...] take on the respective tasks of their higher education provider in science and art, research, teaching and further education [...] indepentently"
Assistant professorships are limited in duration and are usually public officials on a limited appointment. After three years, an interim evaluation will be carried out. After that it will be decided to extend the contract by three years or to terminate the employment relationship. A certain number of assistant professorships are advertised with the option of a Tenure Track.
