Course description

Well designed and correctly analysed experiments are very important to answer your research questions of interest as clearly and efficiently as possible. This seminar will teach you on how to calculate sample size and test power, but will also introduce you to common experimental designs. Learning about the correct statistical models for data analysis will be a major topic of this seminar. Fixed effects models and ANOVAs, but also more sophisticated mixed linear models with fixed and random effects will be discussed. You will learn about appropriate R packages and you will compute examples throughout the seminar, including own data sets if you wish.

Information about the lecturer

Anja Eggert studied "Marine Biology" at the University of Bremen and did her PhD in 2002 at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands. Since then she has been working in several research projects on the adaptation of marine organisms to environmental stress and climate change. During this period, she planned, performed and analysed experiments both in the laboratory and the field. From 2009 – 2018 she changed her methodological focus and used coupled physical-biogeochemical simulation models to study climate change impacts and vulnerability of marine ecosystems. She regularly holds seminars on Statistics for Biologists, including basic introductory courses, experimental design and more sophisticated mixed linear models. Since 2018 she is Head of the Service Group Statistical Consulting at the Leibniz Institute for Farm Animal Biology, based in Dummerstorf near Rostock.
