There is a high expectation of you:...

  • excellent intellectual qualifications

  • strong social and intercultural competence and a robust constitution
  • lifelong flexibility, adaptability and willingness to learn
  • usually relocation all three to four years (when necessary also with family or partner) -at any time anywhere in the world.
  • maybe one day your place of work will be in New York and Rio. But you also have to expect to be sent to a crisis area or a place that may seem less attractive to you right away.

Successful applicants for the higher foreign service will be intensively prepared for future tasks in a 14-month training program. Afterwards, the first assignment will take place at one of the 230 representations abroad or in the headquarters in Berlin.

Internships and preparation service

For flexible and interculturally interested students, the Federal Foreign Office offers the opportunity to complete a compulsory internship at the Berlin head office or in one of the German diplomatic missions abroad. The internship lasts at least six weeks and a maximum of six months. Trainees receive a tax allowance of € 300 per month for a full-time internship.
