To strengthen excellence research and support early-career researchers, the Federal State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has funded and continues to fund research projects through relevant calls for proposals.
Within the Excellence Research Programme, five calls for proposals have already been issued via two-stage competitive procedures. The first round of calls for proposals in 2016 focused on excellent research projects that could be aligned with the priorities of the Regionale Innovationsstrategie 2020 für das Land Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (in German). In the 2017 round of calls for proposals, funding was awarded to research projects that fell within the priority areas of the Master Plan for the Health Economy. Research projects on the topic of digitalisation were the focus of the 2018 call for proposals. During the funding period from 2017 to 2022, funding was provided through Europäischen Sozialfonds (ESF).
In 2024, the “Anwendungsorientierte Exzellenzforschung" programme was launched and implemented through two calls for proposals (2024 and 2025). The programme comprised two funding streams: research consortia and individual projects. The individual projects funding stream was the sole focus of the 2024 call for proposals. A prerequisite for funding was a research link to the fields of action or cross-cutting technologies of the current Regionalen Innovationsstartegie für intelligente Spezialisierung (RIS) des Landes Mecklenburg Vorpommern 2021–2027 (in German). Funding is provided by Europäischen Fonds für Regionale Entwicklung (EFRE).
A general overview of funding for research of excellence by the Federal State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern can be found here. Further information on EU-funded projects can be found here.
