Gender Equality at the University of Rostock
It is time to stop trying to change women, and start changing the systems and power imbalances that prevent them from achieving their potential (António Guterres, 8. März 2020)
Gender equality is essential for a cultural environment of study, research, and work that adheres to the highest quality standards. Achieving gender equality is a central priority for the University of Rostock and an essential part of our open and diverse university culture.
The Gender Equality Officer supports the Rectorate in effectively enforcing equality for women and men in studies, teaching, research, and administration; in eliminating existing disadvantages; and in taking gender equality aspects into account, including in the context of development planning and the allocation of funds (§§ 4, 88 (1) Landeshochschulgesetz Mecklenburg-Vorpommern/ State Higher Education Act of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania).
To fulfill her statutory mandate, the Gender Equality Officer is involved at an early stage in all personnel, organizational, and social measures related to gender equality. She operates independently of any specific directives and is organizationally assigned to the Rector's Office.
The Gender Equality Officer provides support to students, PhD candidates, and university staff regarding issues related to equality and gender justice, balancing family and caregiving responsibilities with academic and professional life, as well as cases of sexual harassment and violence. Discussions with the Gender Equality Officer take place in a confidential and secure environment.
The Gender Equality Officer is supported in her work by her deputy, her associate, and, in matters concerning the faculties, by the faculty representatives and their deputy representatives.
The team of Gender Equality Officers considers gender equality efforts to be a cross-cutting task that touches all areas of the university. Our shared goal is to create a respectful, non-discriminatory, and equitable environment for all students and employees—regardless of their gender identity.
