From July 7 to 11, 2025, bachelor's students from the nine partner universities of the EU-CONEXUS university alliance took part in the first edition of the EU-CONEXUS Summer School on Sustainability Micro-Credentials in Bucharest, Romania. The event was hosted by the Technical University of Civil Engineering Bucharest (UTCB). The University of Rostock was also actively represented by both faculty members and students.
At the heart of the program were three diverse micro-credentials, offered by instructors from Romania, Spain, and Germany:
- Social Entrepreneurship and Commitment in SmUCS – offered by Prof. Johann-Christian Põder (University of Rostock), explored how social engagement and sustainable urban development can interact in European coastal regions.
- Traditional Timber Houses Carpentry in Seismic and Coastal Areas – led by Andreea Duțu (UTCB), focused on traditional timber construction in earthquake-prone and coastal areas.
- English Communication for Sustainable Development – taught by Dr. Arash Javadinejad (Catholic University of Valencia), enhanced language and communication skills in the context of sustainability.
The Summer School provided an inspiring mix of theoretical input, hands-on group work, and intercultural exchange. Students collaborated on concrete issues, gained new perspectives, and developed skills in sustainability, communication, entrepreneurship, and intercultural collaboration.
In his report, Sagead Al Kenany, a student from the University of Rostock, shared his impressions:
“It was not only an academic, but also a social and cultural enrichment. The exchange with students from different countries broadened our horizons—not only linguistically, but also in terms of mindsets, values, and academic cultures. At the same time, it was a welcome change from everyday university life in Rostock. Living, learning, and discovering Bucharest was an experience in itself that should not be missed.”
Beyond academic benefits, the cultural program—featuring excursions and leisure activities—offered many opportunities to explore Bucharest and connect with fellow students. The program was also supported by local students, giving participants a vibrant insight into student life on-site. Participation was supported by a scholarship that covered travel and accommodation costs.
