Triple Success: Three Rostock Physicists Honored at International Conference in Armenia

Three doctoral students from the Institute of Physics at the University of Rostock received awards at this year’s international conference “Optics and its Applications in Quantum Technologies” and the accompanying event “Frontiers in Optics & Photonics” in Yerevan, Armenia.

The conference took place from September 26 to 30, 2025, bringing together researchers from around the world who are working on the latest developments in optics and quantum technologies.

The event promotes international scientific collaboration and the exchange of ideas on the applications of light in quantum communication, quantum information, quantum sensing, and the generation of attosecond pulses. Particularly noteworthy is the close research cooperation between Germany and Armenia, which was further strengthened through this conference.

A special highlight was the awarding of the talk and poster prizes to three young researchers from Rostock:

Mikhail Bednov (M.Sc.) received the prize for the best talk at the WE-Heraeus Seminar “Optics and its Applications in Quantum Technologies.”

Samuel Schöpa (M.Sc.) and Gabriel Cáceres-Aravena (M.Sc.) received the prizes for the best talk and best poster at the 9th International Advanced School “Frontiers in Optics & Photonics.”

All three young scientists are members of the Quantum Theory & Many-Body Systems research group led by Prof. Dr. Dieter Bauer at the Institute of Physics, University of Rostock.
Two of them conduct research within the Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) 1477 “LiMatI”, while one is part of the DFG-funded International Research Training Group (IRTG) 2676 “Imaging Quantum Systems” (IQS).

In Yerevan, they presented their research results from these projects, impressing the jury with scientific originality, clear presentation, and high relevance to current developments in the use of optics for quantum technologies.

“The awards are a wonderful recognition of our doctoral students’ outstanding work and demonstrate that our research enjoys high international visibility,” said Prof. Dr. Stefan Scheel, spokesperson of IRTG 2676.

The spokesperson of CRC 1477 and group leader Prof. Dr. Bauer also expressed his delight at his students’ achievements:

“I am very proud of my doctoral students’ accomplishments. Their awards reflect the high scientific level and dedication of our entire team.”

The recognition highlights the strong position of Rostock’s physics research within the international scientific community and contributes to further strengthening scientific cooperation in the field of quantum technologies.
