PANEL DISCUSSION "HOW DOES DIGITALIZATION CHANGE MY RESEARCH?"

PRELIMINARY STATEMENTS OF THE PODIUM PARTICIPANTS

Forschungsfeld Digitalisierung

Digitization in geodesy and geoinformatics

Geodesy and Geoinformatics

Digitization in statistics

Digitalisierung in forschungsnahen Wirtschaftsbereichen

"In my responsibility, I drive the improvement of the digitalization of Centogene. Centogene is an innovative solution provider for pharma in the field of rare hereditary diseases. We have a global reach and get orders form more than 100 countries worldwide. Medical knowledge and data management drive our business model. Therefore, digitalization is key for us to act globally and generate new knowledge and insight in rare diseases. We develop digitalization by

  1. Offering more efficient and easy to use processes to our customers: the physicians and their patients as well as our industry partners
  2. Automate our internal processes for higher efficiency and better quality
  3. Invest in our data management, data quality and analytical skills
  4. Develop new solutions and products in the digital world, e.g. our myLSDapp to support the communication between patient and physician.

Especially the data management and the usage of artificial intelligence based on our structured and high quality data is critical for us to generate new insights and knowledge for rare diseases. This is to the advantage of the patients and improves the treatments of those diseases."

Data Saves Lives – There is nothing to argue about

"Digitalization, understood as the conversion from analog to digital, replacing paper by computers, using more computer technologies in teaching, service and administration is the dead boring. The exciting part of digitalization is what can be done with and extracted from structured data. Data Science is about the extraction of pattern and knowledge from data and it provides the foundation of new ways to make money - or save lives, when applied to medical data. Here are my main thoughts for this argument: (i) Technological advances drive specialization but to learn from data, we require the opposite – an integration of data, tools and methodologies. (ii) The ICT aspects of data generation are not new. What is new, is the need for methodologies to make sense of data. (iii) Current approaches are too focused on the identification of associations, not causation. Understanding complex systems requires not only machine learning but process thinking and systems theory. (iv) Solutions, using AI and machine learning are not smart, but complex.

The consequences from my perspective on digitalization on education and training is that (i) Inter- and multidisciplinary approaches are gaining importance: (a) Not individual expertise is important but how they are brought together. Multiple types of data and methodologies need to be combined. (b) Learning, learning from each other, communication skills become more important. (ii) Not less but more human values are required: (a) Creative knowledge becomes more important. (b) Judging results and decision making are key skills. (iii) More quantitative thinking is required: (a) Interpreting data, weighing evidence are key competences. (b) Not one approach but the creation of workflows is necessary for practical solutions."
