Studying without a high school diploma
Even if your school leaving certificate does not qualify you for university studies, there are ways to study at the University of Rostock.
▼ Vocational further education (Master craftsman, technician, business specialists, etc.)
Vocationally qualified
Master craftsman, technician, business specialists, etc.
In addition to the master craftsman qualification, numerous further education qualifications based on the Vocational Training Act (BBiG), provided the courses consist of at least 400 teaching hours (e.g., technician, business specialist), qualifications from vocational schools, such as state-certified educators, numerous continuing education qualifications in health professions, as well as qualifications as a tax consultant or auditor, grant general university access.
The university entrance qualification acquired in this way is valid indefinitely. However, this does not guarantee a study place. If the study program is subject to restricted admission, an application is required. The grade from vocational further education is considered equal to the Abitur average grade when applying. Further details are regulated by the Qualification Ordinance of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (M-V).
Entrance exam
Anyone who can provide evidence of at least five years of professional experience or a completed vocational training and at least three years of professional experience can take an entrance exam. The entrance exam is always taken for a specific study program. It must be noted that the training and work experience must have been in a field directly related to the chosen program of study.
Passing the entrance exam qualifies for studying the program specified in the certificate at the University of Rostock. The university entrance qualification obtained through the entrance exam is valid indefinitely. However, passing the entrance exam does not guarantee a study place at the University of Rostock. If the program has restricted admission, an application is still required, even with a passed entrance exam. The grade of the entrance exam is considered equivalent to the Abitur average grade when applying.
The entrance exams are held twice a year. For the entrance exam for the winter semester, applications must be submitted between February 1 and April 1; exams take place by June 15 at the latest. For the entrance exam for the summer semester, the application period is from August 1 to October 1; the exam takes place by December 15 at the latest.

The entrance examination comprises a written and an oral part.
The written examination consists of a supervised essay on the subject-related basics of the chosen degree course and a supervised essay in which the applicant works on a topic from public life, for example politics, culture, economics, technology or the environment. The work takes four hours to complete.
The oral examination covers the subject-related fundamentals of the chosen degree program. The examination board determines whether the oral examination is conducted as an individual or group examination with a maximum of three candidates, whereby each candidate has a minimum of 20 minutes and a maximum of 30 minutes to complete the examination. Only candidates who have passed both supervisory examinations will be admitted to the oral examination.
