The development of new drugs is a time-consuming and costly process, taking an average of 10 years and $2 billion USD. Moreover, the success rate is quite low, with only a fraction of newly developed drugs making it to the market. In contrast, drug repurposing significantly shortens the development process and reduces costs. This allows for faster assistance to patients in need.

Clémence Réda obtained her doctoral degree in Genetics in 2022 from Université Paris Cité. Her current research project revolves around designing and implementing an algorithm for drug repurposing. The researcher utilizes advanced Artificial Intelligence to provide reliable recommendations for medication usage. Long-term research outcomes can contribute to the development of sustainable and transparent approaches for designing drugs to treat rare diseases.

The research project has a duration of two years and is funded with €190,000 through a Marie Skłodowska-Curie postdoctoral fellowship. The collaboration between the University of Rostock and the National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Automation (INRIA Saclay) in France facilitates the investigation and validation of specific machine learning methods, particularly in the area of collaborative filtering of RNA-related data.

As part of the prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions by the European Union, doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers are provided with opportunities to participate in cross-border research projects and expand their knowledge and skills within international research teams.
