Information about PhD programs for international students
As a research-oriented comprehensive university with numerous academic institutions in its vicinity, the University of Rostock offers a wide range of opportunities for doctoral studies. To ensure an optimal start to your doctorate, you will find comprehensive information about the doctoral process on the University of Rostock’s website.
The doctoral regulations of each faculty define the framework and procedural rules. Therefore, the faculties are directly responsible for the quality of the doctoral studies, adherence to the rules ensuring good scientific practice, the prevention of scientific misconduct, and the administrative procedures related to the doctorate. Please consult the websites of your respective faculty for more information.
If you are planning to start a doctoral program at the University of Rostock beginning in the summer semester 2025 and you previously studied at an international university, you must submit your application for admission to study (Application for Admission to Studies for International Applicants) to the Student Office (Studierendensekretariat) of the University of Rostock. Applications can be submitted until September 30, 2025.
The following documents must be submitted:
- A fully completed and signed application form (deu, eng)
- Officially certified copy of the degree certificate qualifying you for doctoral studies (usually a Master’s degree) in the original language, along with an officially certified translation in German or English
- Simple copy of the certificate of any additional university degree (usually a Bachelor’s degree) in the original language, along with a simple copy of the German or English translation
- Simple copy of your university entrance qualification (usually a high school diploma or equivalent) in the original language, along with a simple copy of the German or English translation
- Copy of a valid ID card or passport
- Form for the registration of doctoral candidates – (deu, eng) (submit a simple copy)
The original must be sent to the Graduate Academy!

A confirmation of receipt of the documents will only be provided if you include a pre-prepared, stamped, and addressed postcard as a confirmation of receipt.
The submitted documents will be destroyed after processing. Therefore, do not send any original documents, but only officially certified copies in your own interest.
If you are planning to start a doctoral program at the University of Rostock in the winter semester 2025/2026 and you previously studied at an international university, you must submit your application via the Uni-Assist service platform. The application can be submitted until the end of the respective application semester.
Please note Uni-Assist's processing time, as retroactive enrollment into a semester that has already ended is not possible due to administrative regulations.
The following documents must be submitted online via Uni Assist:
- Officially certified copy of the degree certificate qualifying you for doctoral studies (usually a Master’s degree) in the original language, along with a certified copy of the German or English translation
- Simple copy of the certificate of another university degree (usually a Bachelor’s degree) in the original language, along with a simple copy of the German or English translation
- Simple copy of your university entrance qualification (usually a high school diploma or equivalent) in the original language, along with a simple copy of the German or English translation
- Copy of a valid ID card or passport
