Enrollment in a higher semester
Prospective students have the opportunity to apply for a place in a higher semester based on previously completed academic achievements (within the same degree program, a different program and/or at another university). As with enrolment in the 1st subject semester, a distinction is made between non-restricted and restricted degree programs.
To find out whether your desired degree program is subject to admission restrictions in a higher semester, please refer to this ► overview.
Enrollment for degree programs that are not subject to admission restrictions in higher semesters takes place via the University of Rostock’s online portal:
- for the winter semester: from June 1 to September 30 of the respective year.
- for the summer semester: from February 1 to March 31 of the respective year.
The portal required for this process (see below) will be accessible during the specified period.
To begin, you must first create a personal account by selecting “Register.” This account will allow you to monitor the status of your application at any time. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email to verify your email address. Follow the instructions provided in this email to activate your account. Please ensure that you use a valid and regularly accessed email address, as you will receive important information related to the entire enrollment process through this channel.
Once your account has been activated, you may log in to the portal using your username (as stated in the email) and your chosen password to begin the enrollment process.
Important: Students currently enrolled at the University of Rostock should log into the portal under “Students” using their university account and use the button labeled “Apply for degree program / Change degree program.” Further information regarding a change of program can be found on the corresponding webpage.
Please enter the details of your desired degree program and upload any required documents in PDF format. Only complete documents should be uploaded.
Once all required information has been entered, a printable PDF form will be generated. This form must be signed and submitted via post, along with all required documents, to the address provided below.
In the case of incomplete submissions, the missing documents must be submitted by the stated deadline. There will be no separate postal notification requesting missing documents. Please allow for a processing time of approximately two weeks and refrain from inquiries during this period.
Please note: The crucial date for meeting the enrollment deadline is not the online submission of data, but rather the receipt of the complete application by post.
Following receipt and verification of all enrollment documents, a provisional enrollment will be processed. You will then receive an email from the Student Office requesting payment of the current semester fee, including a reference for the transfer. Once the notification from your health insurance provider has been received and the semester fee has been credited to the university’s account, final enrollment will be completed, and you will receive an email prompting you to activate your university account. Your student ID card, including the semester ticket, will only be issued and sent after you have activated your account. Confirmation of enrollment and BAföG certificates can then be printed directly from the online portal’s student service section (login required with your university account).
Important Note: Prospective students who were previously enrolled in the same degree program at another German university and now seek admission to a higher semester at the University of Rostock will be placed into the semester that follows their previously completed semester—regardless of academic evaluation. As a result, it is possible to be placed in a higher semester than your academic standing justifies, which may lead to considerable gaps in knowledge or coursework. Please observe the deadlines and requirements outlined in the relevant examination regulations.
For teacher training students (with transferable academic achievements): Please notify the Central Examination Office for Teacher Training (ZPA) of your change of university or degree program immediately after completing your enrollment.
Prospective students seeking to enroll in a restricted-admission degree program in a higher semester must first apply via the University of Rostock’s online portal within the specified application period. Further details can be found ► here.
If you have already submitted your application and received an admission offer, you may proceed with enrollment via the online portal. The deadline for submitting the required enrollment documents by post can be found in your official letter of admission.
Important for teacher training students (with transferable academic achievements):
Please notify the Central Examination Office for Teacher Training (ZPA) of any change in university or degree program immediately after completing your enrollment.
- Signed enrollment application form (to be generated via the online portal)
- Copy of your admission letter (only required for degree programs with admission restrictions)
- Proof of university entrance qualification (typically your secondary school leaving certificate, e.g. Abitur) (for an officially certified copy, see notes on certifications)
- For second degree applicants: officially certified copy of your university degree certificate and a simple copy of your university entrance qualification
- Copy of a valid national ID card or passport
- Complete tabular curriculum vitae from the age of 16, with date and signature
- Proof of academic placement (Einstufungsbescheinigung) issued by the relevant examination office for the chosen degree program
- Certificate of non-objection from the examination office at your previous university (confirming eligibility to continue in the previous program, including a record of all passed and failed examinations)
- For all teacher training programs: proof of participation in the self-assessment procedure (CCT)
- For the teaching subject Physical Education: proof of successful completion of the aptitude test for sports
- Copies of all certificates of de-registration and a current or most recent certificate of study (enrolment certificate), indicating the number of completed semesters
Important Information on Health Insurance
According to § 199a of the German Social Code (SGB V), data exchange between universities and health insurance providers must be carried out exclusively in electronic form. Please notify your health insurance provider immediately of your intended enrollment at the University of Rostock and request that they electronically transmit confirmation of your insurance status. Be sure to provide the university’s transmission number: H0001053. Note that this process may take several days. If you are privately insured, you must also contact a statutory health insurance provider to clarify your insurance status ("exempt from mandatory insurance" or "statutory insurance"). The required electronic notification can only be submitted by a statutory health insurance provider, regardless of your actual insurance.
Please do not staple or clip your documents together. Submit all documents in a minimum format of A5. All submitted materials will be destroyed after processing. Therefore, do not submit original documents—only officially certified copies where required.
Your enrollment can only be finalized once all required documents have been submitted completely and on time, the electronic insurance status confirmation has been received by the University of Rostock, and the semester fee has been paid in full.
A confirmation of receipt by post will only be issued if you include a self-addressed, stamped postcard prepared in advance for that purpose.
