Supporting career paths – fair, diverse and sustainable!

This is where early-career researchers in particular can find guidance and information on career pathways within and beyond the university.

What comes after the PhD? How can I best prepare for my future career? Which additional skills do I need? Which path is the right one for me?

We are happy to support you with these and similar questions.

Our aim is to provide an attractive environment with a wide range of support services. In addition to skills development, early-career support and talent development focus on transparently presenting possible career pathways within and beyond the University.

Academic career stages

Researchers go through different qualification stages. The European Commission describes four career stages in the Framework for Research Careers:

  • During the doctoral phase (R1), the focus is on developing the ability to conduct independent research.

  • The subsequent early and advanced postdoctoral phase (R2) and

  • the established research phase (R3) serve to further develop academic expertise and demonstrate research performance.

  • Leading researchers who have already produced independent scientific achievements in their field and hold leadership positions are in the consolidation phase (R4).

The qualification stages R1 to R3 are generally considered the “early-career researchers” stage. The classification of these stages is based on the degree of research independence, reputation, performance in research and teaching, and the development of subject-specific, transferable, and social competencies.
