The aim is to fund at least four projects per year. The exact number depends on the financial means granted by the University of Rostock.

WHAT is included in the funding?

The Mare Balticum Fellowship Program serves the funding of guest stays (max. 3 months) of national and international researchers. The grant includes:

  • Expense allowance for guest academics: 3000 € per month (incl. accommodation and daily allowance) or per diem in the amount of 130 € for guest visits of 22 days maximum

You can invite both national and international guest researchers with a completed doctorate who already achieved scientific independence (R3-level according to EU Classification). Multiple funding of a Fellow through the Mare Balticum Fellowship Program is excluded.

WHY is the application worth the effort?

Invite a guest researcher and, as an applicant, take advantage of the opportunities offered by the program:

  • Deepening of the interdisciplinary cooperation
  • Enhancement and stimulation of national and international science relations
  • Strengthening of own research activities
  • Initiation and preparation of joint projects
  • Promotion of early career researchers

HOW is the selection procedure organized?

After completing the application via the online application form you will get a confirmation of receipt. After the application deadline, all applications received will first be reviewed by the Vice-Rector for Research and Knowledge Transfer in order to check the general requirements. If necessary, the Vice-Rector for Research and Knowledge Transfer will contact the applicant if there are any questions regarding the application. After the Vice-Rector for Research and Knowledge Transfer has reviewed the applications, they are forwarded to the Executive Board of the Interdisciplinary Faculty with a recommendation on their eligibility for funding. The Board of the Interdisciplinary Faculty follows up on the recommendation on eligibility and - if necessary - prioritizes the submitted projects and sends this to the Vice-Rector for Research and Knowledge Transfer. The Vice-Rector for Research and Knowledge Transfer decides on the funding approval. After the review and decision phase (2 - 4 weeks after the application deadline), you will receive a funding confirmation or a rejection letter from the Vice-Rector for Research and Knowledge Transfer. Rejections are generally not justified.

WHAT is meant by the conception of a series of events for young scientists?

With the request to invite a guest researcher, the conception of a series of events for early career researchers is expected. after successful approval

How are the grants paid out?

It is planned to transfer the allowance (including the travel allowance) as an advance payment, 30 days before the beginning of the guest stay, as a total amount to the fellow's bank account.

The payment of the expense allowance is made without deduction of taxes. According to the German Fiscal Code, the University is obliged to report payments exceeding 1,500.00 EUR per year to the tax offices. This also applies to foreign payees. The responsible tax office will be informed of the payment in accordance with the notification regulation of 07.09.1993, BGBl. I p. 1554 in the version of 23.12.2003. The fellow is responsible for recording and declaring the payment. The respective tax office will then decide on taxation in accordance with the applicable law.

In the event that childcare is required, the Prorectorate for Research and  Transfer of Knowledge will settle the costs incurred directly with the relevant service provider (by invoice).

WHO takes over the communication with the guest scientist?

In the event of approval, the host researcher and the fellow will each receive a letter of approval.

Further responsibility for communication with the fellow lies with the host scientist or the respective department of the Interdisciplinary Faculty at the University of Rostock.

Two months prior to the beginning of the stay, the host researcher or the respective department of the Interdisciplinary Faculty will contact the Proectorate of Research and Transfer of Knowledge to arrange a joint welcome meeting with the fellow.

Furthermore, it is expected that the host researcher or the respective department of the Interdisciplinary Faculty submits complete information on the individual courses to the Prorector of Research and Transfer of Knowledge (mabafuni-rostockde) and the Graduate Academy (gradauni-rostockde) two months before the beginning of the stay.

WHO is responsible for the preparation and organization of the stay?

The stay is primarily prepared and organized jointly by the host researcher and the fellow. The respective coordinators of the assigned department support the researcher in organizing the stay. Furthermore, the Graduate Academy is happy to share its experience with you.

The Advice on the preparation and accompanying guest stays is intended to support the researchers in their preparation and organisation.
