In the following you find an overview about the habilitation at the University of Rostock. The binding arrangements of planning a habilitation are written down in the habilitation regulations. Please, inform yourself on the website of the responsible faculties. In case of questions about the procedure get in touch with the department head or the contacts of the faculties.

THE PROCEDURE

Admission to the habilitation

The requirements for admission to the habilitation are laid down in the habilitation regulations of the faculties. Requirements for a habilitation are the possession of a university degree (master's degree, diploma, or equivalent) and a doctorate as well as several years of work in research and teaching in the respective habilitation field. Special regulations must be observed in individual cases (foreign degrees, degrees from universities of applied sciences). The existence of language skills may also be required for habilitation, depending on the desired academic degree.

Graduate Academy - Become a member & use the offers

The Graduate Academy is the central service institution and coordination point for early career researchers and supports doctoral students and PostDocs within the scope of their qualification primarily with an interdisciplinary qualification programme and offers its members various possibilities for professional and interdisciplinary networking.

A further aim of the funding opportunities is to support the scientific exchange and presentation of research results.

Doctoral students and PostDocs of the University of Rostock can apply for membership of the Graduate Academy.

Start good informed - Reading the habilitation regulations & checking the entry requirements

At the beginning of a habilitation plan it is useful to read the habilitation regulations of the responsible faculty. Within the habilitation regulations, amongst other things, requirements for a habilitation are settled. Especially early career researchers, who gained their academic or doctoral degree from a universisty outside of Germany, are advised to check the entry requirements for a habilitation as early as possible.

Funding - evaluate the possibilities

In case of advertised vacant positions in research projects, graduate colleges or similar, the financing is already clarified and runs via qualification centers for academic staff members.

Furthermore, there are many programs that support Postdocs specificly: DFG ("Eigene Stelle", Emmy Noether- or Heisenberg-Program), EU (Marie-Curie-Fellowships), DAAD, diverse foundations etc. There are several databases on the internet which help with the research for funding possibilities (e.g. www.e-fellows.net).

After successful habilitation..

Right to lecuture (Venia legendi)

The right to lecutre (venia legendi) entitles persons with a habilitation to independently offer courses in his or her subject at the university. It can be applied for the right to lecture informally at the faculty after a successful habilitation. The Academic Senate decides on the granting and the scope of the right. Details of the procedure can be found in the Habilitation regulations. The right to use the name "private lecturer" is associated with the right to lecture. The researcher is obliged to regularly offer courses in his/her subject area. If the private lecturer does not offer an independent teaching activity for two years without good reason, the right to lecture can be revoked.

Extension of the habilitation

If the teaching qualification has been acquired at another scientific university or if the teaching qualification is to be recognised for a subject or subject area other than the subject or subject area designated with the habilitation, a re-habilitation or extension of the habilitation can be applied for. The conditions under which this can be implemented can be found in the respective habilitation regulations.
