Call for applications: PhD Scholarship in the field of plant molecular biology

The group of Jun.-Prof. A. Richter for the ‚Physiology of Plant Metabolism' seeks a highly motivated candidate (f/m/d) for a PhD Scholarship in the field of plant molecular biology.

The work of the group is dedicated to the understanding of the physiological aspects and molecular mechanisms, which allow plants to acclimate to an ever-changing environment (e.g., high light or low temperature). On the one hand, we are interested to understand how plants recognise changes in the environment and how these stimuli are translated into signals to modify the expression of genes in the nucleus needed to cope with the new environment (intracellular signalling). On the other hand, using physiological, genetic, and biochemical analysis, we aim to understand how enzymes, particularly those involved in flavonoid biosynthesis, are regulated on the post-translational level. Also, the group's work aims to translate findings from basic research into biotechnological applications by analysing the impact of anthocyanins on plant fitness during acclimation.

Field of Study and Requirements:

With the envisioned PhD project, the successful candidate will analyse the acclimation response and perform physiological and molecular characterisation of Arabidopsis wild-type and mutant plants. Also, a forward genetic screen for the identification of new components of signalling cascades and regulatory factors needed for the acclimation response is envisioned.
The ideal candidate for the scholarship should have finished (or soon will finish) the Master studies with an excellent thesis in the field of plant molecular biology/physiology. The end of the Master studies should not be more than 1 year ago. Knowledge of techniques for the extraction and quantification of biomolecules, such as DNA, RNA and Protein, ideally from the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana, is required. In addition, first experience with the measurements of photosynthetic parameters or handling of large datasets (e.g., transcriptome, proteome, metabolome) would be beneficial.

The scholarship will be given for initially 2 years with the option for extension after successful evaluation. The amount of the scholarship will be 1.600€ per month. Envisioned start: September 2021.

Your application should contain (in one PDF document)

  • CV
  • performance overview (Leistungsübersicht)
  • a motivation letter (not more than two pages)
  • at least one letter of recommendation
  • relevant certificates

Applications could also be submitted in German.

Please send your application to pflanzliche-stoffwechselphysiologieuni-rostockde. The application period is open until 30.06.2021

Further information:

Equal opportunity is an essential part of our human resources policy. In case of equal qualification, applications from severely disabled people or equivalent are explicitly welcome. The University of Rostock seeks to increase the proportion of women in research and teaching and particularly encourages female applicants to apply for this position. Applications from foreign scientist and people with migration background are appreciated.
