Workshop: Social Justice Network Analysis (SJNA) on April 10, 2025

Introduction to Social Network Analysis (SNA) using data from the film industry with media scientist Prof. Dr. Deb Verhoeven (Mare Balticum Fellow) and her colleague, Dr. Pete Jones Max from the University of Alberta, Canada – Workshop on April 10, 2025

Films are produced to be distributed to audiences across space and time. This movement is the result of numerous collaborative processes that take place through social, commercial, and professional networks. Using information from a unique dataset, participants will learn how to build and visualize networks in the film industry and examine key network metrics. Participants will work directly with Kinomatics screening data to analyze a German cinema case study. The session will conclude with presentations from the participants. No prior knowledge of network analysis is required. Please bring a laptop.

Prof. Deb Verhoeven is considered one of the leading experts in the field of new network-based methods for analyzing inequalities in the cultural industries. Since 2019, Deb Verhoeven has held the Research Chair for Gender and Cultural Informatics at the University of Alberta, Canada. In her work, Prof. Deb Verhoeven explores an innovative data-driven approach she calls Social Justice Network Analysis (SJNA): "SJNA can identify patterns of unequal relationships in large data sets. This tool enables researchers, activists, and policymakers to analyze equal opportunities." The focus is not only on individuals, but also on connections, communities, networks, and cohorts.

Since 2020, Deb Verhoeven has been an advisory board member of the "Knowledge - Culture - Transformation" Department of the Interdisciplinary Faculty at the University of Rostock.

From March 15 to May 10, the Australian-born researcher will be a Mare Balticum Fellow at the University of Rostock.
